The People Behind 40 Years: Nichola Underwood
As Peartree celebrates 40 years in business, we are recognising the people who have helped shape the company throughout its journey.
For Nichola Underwood, People Director, that journey began eight years ago when she joined the business as Payroll Manager; her first management role.
Looking back, Nichola recalls the support and trust she received from the outset as being key to her development.
“From day one, I felt trusted and encouraged by both the leadership team and my colleagues.”
Since joining Peartree, Nichola has continued to develop her skills and responsibilities, progressing from Payroll Manager to People Director. Along the way, she completed a Foundation Degree in Payroll Management and achieved her CIPD Level 5 qualification, supported by the business throughout her studies.
“Peartree has always been open to supporting people who want to develop. I was given both the time and encouragement to complete my qualifications, which made a real difference to my career.”
During her time with the company, Nichola has seen Peartree evolve significantly. She highlights the growth of the business, the increasing focus on ESG and social value, and the way the company adapted during the challenges of COVID-19 as some of the biggest changes she has witnessed.
Despite this evolution, she believes one thing has remained constant. “For me, it’s the people. We have a fantastic team and a culture where everyone wants to help each other succeed.”
As People Director, Nichola works closely with colleagues across the business and believes Peartree’s supportive culture is one of the reasons so many employees choose to build long-term careers with the company.
“We have strong relationships between managers and their teams, people feel comfortable speaking up, and there is a real sense of transparency across the business.”
Reflecting on Peartree’s 40th anniversary, Nichola believes the company should be most proud of the loyalty and commitment shown by its people. “We still have employees who transferred to us under TUPE more than 20 years ago and remain with the business today. That says a lot about the environment we’ve created.”
As Peartree looks ahead to its next chapter, Nichola remains excited about the opportunities ahead, particularly the continued focus on sustainability, employee wellbeing and supporting people to develop their careers.
After eight years with the business, her story is a great example of how opportunity, trust and support can help people grow alongside the company.
